The Evolution of The Lullabys (20 years in the making)…
It was way back in 1988 that Gav wrote his first song, a mediocre soft-rock tune called ‘100% Woman’ – about someone he was in love with but she never knew. Thankfully it will never see the light of day. But the tone was set. It was a song of hope and wishful thinking. She seemed like the epitome of womanhood.
After purchasing a little Fostex 4-track tape machine Gav and his brother, Ju, got to work and spent the next few years writing and recording all they had. Soon 60+ original songs were down on tape and were sent all over the world in the hope of getting a deal. Like so many other artists, nothing happened. The dream was over and Gav put his bass away.

Then ten years later, during the break-up of a relationship, he found solace in a cheap acoustic guitar bought from a charity shop. ‘Where Do We Go From Here?’ virtually wrote itself. As the relationship continued to wane other songs emerged, coming from somewhere in the cosmos. ‘Maybe Tonight’ was written in the garden of his folk’s house on a lovely sunny day. Then ‘Do You Still Love Me Baby?’ followed by ‘Marooned’ and ‘A Wonderful Two Years’. The emotions helped Gav to finish older songs such as ‘I Still Wanna See Her’ and ‘I Don’t Belong To Anyone’, songs that had been sitting on the shelf for more than a decade gathering dust.
It was during the break-up in 2007 that Gav and Ju recorded what would eventually become the album, ‘The Long Goodbye’. Hours were spent, day and night, recording and mixing 11 tracks. The mixing was all done on headphones - a cardinal sin in the world of mixing music – but it felt natural for Gav to do it that way. Everybody who heard it said it was great. |

Gav and Ju started doing a few Open Mic nights in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, each playing their acoustic guitars. But it wasn’t until meeting Brett Alexander Robertson in October 2008 that things started to really take shape.
In Caffe Nero in Bury St Eds, Gav gave Brett a copy of his CD. Brett said he had a recording studio and, like Gav had also been out of the music scene for ten years, having previously played drums in several well-known rock bands throughout the UK. He loved Gav's songs so much he decided to buy a set of congas and soon The Lullabys were formed and the band rehearsed hard to get a set together.
Gav never envisaged congas but Brett soon developed his own unique way of playing and people loved it. Within a few weeks The Lullabys were out gigging and playing regularly on the Open Mic circuit, at private parties and making appearances on local radio shows.
Brett designed The Lullabys website and before long a fan-base was forming. |
In the summer of 2009 final alterations were made to the original recordings and after more remixes Brett re-mastered the album, ready for release. Thus, a two year project, started by Gav finally came to fruition. First off was the release of the debut EP/Single, ‘Maybe Tonight’ in September. Then in November ‘The Long Goodbye’ was released on iTunes. Eleven songs about the break-up. Eleven songs about love, loss and hope. Lullabys for grown-ups.

It seems a long time since Gav and Ju recorded the songs and things have definitely changed with The Lullabys sound but, as a piece of art, ‘The Long Goodbye’ had to be released, lest it be lost in the mists of time!
The songs on the album, save for a few tweaks, are the original recordings, made during times of great personal insecurity and uncertainty. You can hear this on the recordings. There are haunting keys, vulnerable guitars, sad and lonely 3-part vocal harmonies and all the time the bass and drums are trying to hold everything together. Of course, if you’ve seen The Lullabys play live they are more stripped back – laid bare - unplugged, sometimes with just Gav on vocals and guitar and Brett on congas. But that’s what makes a great song; if it stands up as a two-piece or a whole band and people are still tapping their feet or whistling the tune.
Now, after an appearance on BBC Radio and a new single coming out in April, 2010 looks set to be a year of excitement and adventure. Register as a fan today and come along for the ride. We’d love to take you with us!
